Five places where a studio loses jobs. And where to start

If you do good work and there are still gaps in your calendar, the problem often isn't a lack of clients but what happens after the first call. Here are five places where work slips away, and a simple way to check each of them.

Cold to Close

1. The missed call

The crew is working on cars, the phone rings, nobody picks up. The client calls the next studio on the map.

How to check: go through your call log for the last two weeks. Count the missed calls from unknown numbers and see how many of them you called back the same day.

What helps: an SMS to the client 30 seconds after the missed call, asking what it's about. The client replies and waits for you instead of calling around.

2. Messages after hours

A client messages you on Instagram on Saturday evening, because they work during the week. You reply on Monday, and by then they already have a slot with someone who replied on Saturday.

How to check: look at what time last month's messages came in and how many hours it took you to reply.

What helps: a reply within a minute at any hour, with a price range from your price list and a free slot.

3. The quote that gets no reply

You send a quote worth a few thousand euros. The client goes quiet and nobody gets back to them. You don't know whether they chose someone else or simply didn't have time to reply.

How to check: take your quotes from the last three months and mark the ones that ended in neither a job nor a refusal.

What helps: a reminder after two days and another after a week. The client picks a slot or says “no” - but no longer disappears without a word.

4. The client list nobody calls

You have hundreds of clients who had a coating, film or an air-con service done with you. Nobody reminds them it's time for the next visit.

How to check: count your clients from a year ago and from two years ago, and see how many of them came back.

What helps: a reminder when the coating or film is due for a service - only to clients who agreed to be contacted.

5. Reviews nobody asks for

Your work is as good as the studio down the road, but they have 200 reviews and you have 23. They come out better on the map, because someone there looks after reviews.

How to check: compare your number of Google reviews with the three businesses that show up above you on the map.

What helps: one review request after every car pick-up, to every client, with a link straight to your Google profile.

Where to start

With the place where the most money leaks, not with whatever is easiest to fix. The phone and messages are about new clients and the biggest jobs, so they're usually the place to start. But work it out for your own business: if you have a big client list and few calls, start with service reminders.

The packages follow the same order. the system looks after the phone and reviews. START adds a reply to every inquiry within a minute. SYSTEM adds reminders about quotes and services, plus a chat on your website that books clients.
